Alan Boehmer operates The Baywood Studio in Los Osos for piano students of all ages and performance levels. He has taught over 2,000 private students from 1960—present, some of whom have become professional pianists, accompanists, conductors, composers and university faculty members. Twelve have been winners of the Paderewski Youth Piano Competition and many others have been selected for performance at CAPMT state conventions and festivals in San Francisco and Los Angeles. One 12 year-old student took 1st place statewide in CAPMT’s Contemporary Music Competition (2019), placing first over all age groups.

At the Baywood Studio we specialize in piano technique, sight reading, music theory, classical and contemporary literature and gospel piano.

During the COVID-19 pandemic all students use hand sanitizer and masks and our two-piano studio allows for social distancing.

Points of Interest and Accomplishments

  • Canadian born pianist, organist, composer, author and educator.
  • Won International 1st place in the YFC International Youth Piano Competition, 1959, Winona Lake, Indiana.
  • Graduate of Occidental College, Music Composition/Piano Performance (M.A.), Los Angeles.
  • Recipient of the Eleanor Remick Warren Award in music composition, 1968.
  • Won 1st place in MTAC statewide music composition competition, presented at state convention in San Francisco, 1969.
  • Studied voice with Paul Munch (Los Angeles) and George Bragg (Ft. Worth, TX).
  • Associate Director of the Pasadena Boys Choir (1973-1988). Conducted all concert tours (England, France, Germany, Austria, U.S. Western States, Hawaii)
  • Received commissions to compose music for the University of Redlands (CA), Great Falls Symphonic Choir (MT), the Baptist Voice Children’s Choir (CA) along with several dozen pieces for the Pasadena Boys Choir and orchestra. His staged production, The Union Forever for boys choir and orchestra, is a theatrical work showcasing music of the Civil War, premiered at Ambassador Auditorium, Pasadena.
  • Was commissioned to compose Messe pour les Enfants du Monde for the choir of Notre Dame, Paris, and conducted its performance in the cathedral during mass as the selected liturgy of the day, August 1984. The work was selected by Dir. Francis Bardot for inclusion in the repertory of the UNESCO Children’s Choir.
  • Founding member of the California Association of Professional Music Teachers (CAPMT) and served as the first chairman of its state commission on music theory.
  • Author of Music Theory for the Young Singer, 2 vols. (Delos Press).
  • Guest lecturer on music education at California State University, Los Angeles, Cal State University, Sonoma, and Cal State University, Northridge. Choral compositions have been performed twice in Cal Poly choral concerts.
  • Music Director of Opera San Luis Obispo Summer Opera Camp, 2001-present.
